“Funky Thing” - Wenn die ‚Rhythm Section’ der Motor jeder guten Deep-Funk Nummer ist, dann ist in diesem Fall das Schmieröl die B3 Orgel. Das Organ-Monster schlechthin, mit dem legendären Intro: „…Do Your Funky Thing!”. Was anschließend auf jeder Tanzfläche wütet ist „Funk-Legende”! Eine der meist gesuchten Scheiben und daher ziemlich schwer eine Hand an ein Original zu bekommen.

Das besondere an der Scheibe auf “Al King”, und mit einer der Gründe warum sie so legendär ist, ist aber nicht nur die monströse Nummer, eines der gewaltigsten Funk Stücke die jemals in Vinyl gepresst wurden, es ist auch die grandiose Geschichte hinter dieser Scheibe. Eigentlich unglaublich aber wahr, „Funky Thing” war mehr oder weniger ein Unfall: 1969, „Larry Ellis & The Black Hammer” waren für ihre Aufnahmen gerade auf dem Weg in die “Gotham Studios” nach New York City als ihr klappriger Van den Geist aufgibt. Die Reparatur kostet sie ein paar Stunden und als sie endlich im Studio angekommen sind bleiben von der ehemals gebuchten Aufnahmezeit nur noch gerade mal 30 Minuten. Nach dem Aufbau der Instrumente spielt die Band mit „Larry Ellis” an der B3 erst mal ihre reguläre Warm-Up Nummer und das war es dann auch schon mit der verbliebenen Zeit. Glücklicherweise liefen die Tapes bereits und „Funky Thing” war drauf!

 ”Funky Thing” ist genau eine der Scheiben, die mich den ganzen Sammler stress, die dummen Gerüchte, die Preiskämpfe, den Neid, etc. vergessen lassen. Der Moment als meine Kopie das erste Mal durch meine Hände auf meinen Plattenspieler glitt, das erste Mal die Nadel ansetzen und dann das erste Mal den Sound hören, der mich immer wieder wissen lässt warum ich überhaupt Funk höre! Ehrlicher Funk in seiner reinsten und dreckigsten Form. Und das Original klingt noch mal um einiges dicker als Jazzman’s Re-Issue, fragt meine Nachbarn! (Dan45)
